Understanding Tread and Pressure

Until we have a problem, most of us spend very little time thinking about our tires. Ignoring them even before they get a puncture or a blowout actually costs us money, so it's a good idea to regularly inspect your tires to ensure they're inflated properly.

Underinflated tires increase drag as the car propels them along, causing the engine to work harder and thus use more gas. They are also more prone to damage from potholes and can also experience a blowout. Keep your tires properly inflated using your owner's manual as a guide. The manufacturer will have listed the proper inflation, so check your tires regularly to ensure they fall in that range. Your tire tread gives you extra traction, so test it with a Lincoln penny to make sure the tread is deep enough. If you place Lincoln headfirst in a tread and can see the top of his head, your tread is low.
